HTC Edge: First Quad-Core Phone Revealed (Images)

admin

Meet the HTC Edge: reportedly the company's first -- and probably one of the world's first -- cellphone powered by a quad-core processor. Information from a reliable source paints Edge as a premium handset incorporating the latest mobile technologies -- for the most part.

The 4.7-inch Edge will allegedly be slightly over ten millimeters thick, and appears to be very much the successor to the just-unveiled Rezound/Vigor, as it should feature the same 720p resolution, 1GB of RAM, and backlit eight-megapixel camera with 28-millimeter, f/2.2 lens. The major improvement, then, would be Edge's supposed AP30 Tegra 3 CPU from Nvidia, which offers four 1.5GHz cores to Rezound's two. Internal storage will likely be bumped to 32GB, while the Bluetooth radio should hit version 4.0. Naturally, Beats Audio enhancements would be part of the package.

Edge may also see the rollout of new or improved HTC content services, such as the previously tipped HTC Listen music store, HTC Read bookstore, and HTC Play gaming hub; the HTC Watch movie portal will reportedly begin to offer HD fare. Additionally, Edge could be one of the first Sense 4.0 devices.

One thing that wasn't mentioned was LTE capability, with Edge only said to support 21Mbps HSDPA; it's possible that carrier-specific variants will still offer this highly-desired functionality. Also absent was mention of a specific version of Android, although if it doesn't ship with Ice Cream Sandwich (fairly unlikely), an upgrade would surely be deployed in short order.

We're expecting Edge to arrive in late Q1/early Q2 of next year.

Galaxy S II Skyrocket & Vivid to Get Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrade in 2012

[AT&T Confirms Android 4.0 ICS Upgrade For Its Two Android LTE Smartphones, Made by Samsung & HTC]

A few days ago AT&T announced two Android 4G LTE smartphones, the Samasung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and the HTC Vivid, which will both be available in stores staring with November 6. Since they will both come with Gingerbread on board, one of the first questions that comes to mind is when will they be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich?

Apparently AT&T confirmed that both the Skyrocket and the Vivid will get their ICS builds at some point in 2012, but the carrier didn’t actually specify exact details about an ICS roll out. Of course it’s up to Samsung and HTC, respectively, to deliver the updates, and considering that Android OS upgrades do not always come in a timely fashion, I wouldn’t hold my breath on a very early ICS upgrade for these phones.
Like most Android makers, Samsung and HTC are yet to detail their ICS roll-out plans for their current line-ups, but we would assume that at least their most recent smartphones will run Google’s latest Android OS version. By comparison, Motorola has already confirmed ICS upgrade plans for the Droid RAZR, Droid Bionic and Xoom tablet, but the company will offer more detailed information six weeks after ICS becomes official.
AT&T’s Skyrocket and Vivid are meant to fight against Verizon’s recently announced LTE handsets, the Galaxy Nexus, the Droid RAZR and the HTC Rezound, although it looks like Verizon is winning this battle considering the increased hype around its upcoming LTE smartphones.
The Skyrocket and Vivid do offer some very interesting specs and features, so if Verizon is not your favorite carrier and you are interested in a 4G LTE smartphone you may want to check them out. The HTC Vivid will cost $199.99 with a two-year agreement while the Skyrocket is priced at $249.99, also on contract. And yes, AT&T’s LTE smartphones happen to be cheaper than either one of Verizon’s trio (each priced at $299.99 with a contract).
Is ICS a favor when choosing your next Android smartphone? Will you buy the Galaxy Nexus or a Gingerbread-running handset this holiday season?

HTC Rezound: First Press Shots

Thursday admin

Like most phones these days, the high-end HTC Rezound has been seen numerous times prior to tomorrow's expected NYC debut -- it's hard to keep a highly-anticipated phone like this secret. Now we've got some official press shots showing off all the angles.

Headed for Verizon's 4G LTE network, the handset formerly known as Vigor has been tipped to feature a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, and will likely be HTC's first phone to offer a 720p HD display. As the first Beats-infused phone to hit a US carrier, bundled earbuds and enhanced audio are pretty much a given. A Gingerbread build of Android is probably going to ship here, but we'd be surprised if an Ice Cream Sandwich update wasn't released fairly soon.

According to Droid-Life, Rezound should begin shipping in the middle of the month for $299 on contract.
