AT&T Avail Prepaid Android GoPhone (AT&T) Overviews

Enjoy the power of the Android platform while enjoying the freedom of AT&T's GoPhone pre-paid service with the AT&T Avail from ZTE. The 3G-enabled Avail lets you fire off text messages and e-mails on the 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen. Snap photos and record videos with the 5-megapixel camera and camcorder and upload them to Facebook or YouTube. And keep yourself organized by customizing up to seven home screens with the apps and widgets you use most.

AT&T Avail

Running the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating system, you'll be able to download apps, games, books, and movies from Android Market when you have a little free time, and do it all while listening to your favorite songs on the Avail's built-in music player.

Other features include Wi-Fi networking (802.11b/g), Bluetooth for hands-free devices and stereo music streaming, included 2 GB microSD card (with expansion to 32 GB via optional cards), access to personal and corporate e-mail, GPS for navigation using Google Maps or optional AT&T Navigator, and up to 5 hours of talk time.

AT&T Avail

Pay As You Go with GoPhone

With AT&T's GoPhone pay-as-you-go service, you get all the benefits of wireless without the surprises--no long-term contracts, credit checks, or deposits. You can easily refill your minutes via prepaid cards or the Internet, or choose to prepay each month and roll over unused minutes.

You can choose from a variety of plans that suit your individual needs--including monthly and daily plans with unlimited talk and text messaging as well as a simple per-minute plan. And with Rollover Balance, you can carry over your unused account balance when you refill before your balance expires, up to the account maximum (learn more below).

Vital Statistics

The AT&T Avail weighs 4.48 ounces and measures 4.57 x 2.46 x 0.5 inches. Its lithium-ion battery is rated at up to 5 hours of talk time, and up to 225 hours (9.4 days) of standby time. It runs on the 850/900/1800/1900 MHz GSM/GPRS/EDGE frequencies as well as AT&T's dual-band 3G network (850/1900 MHz; HSDPA/UMTS) plus 2100 MHz international 3G networks.

What's in the Box

AT&T Avail handset, rechargeable battery, wall charger, charger, 2 GB microSD card, quick start guide, SIM card

Android Gingerbread Operating System

Android Gingerbread

The AT&T Avail runs the Android 2.3 operating system (dubbed Gingerbread)--the fastest version of Android available for smartphones yet. It features a cleaner, more refined interface with new icons, improved top notification bar, and more intuitive navigation.

Multitasking in Gingerbread allows you the ability to run more than one app at a time. If you're playing a game, you can easily switch to an incoming e-mail and then switch back to the game without losing your place. And like the previous version of Android ("Froyo"), Gingerbread provides support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 for access to the full Web.

The onscreen keyboard makes it easier to type thanks to additional spacing between the keys and larger font sizes. And the more you use the keyboard, the easier typing will be as the enhanced suggest feature records previous input history to make better suggestions.

The AT&T Avail also brings one-touch access to the popular Google mobile services you use every day. It also provides easy access to both personal and corporate e-mail, calendars, and contacts supported by Exchange Server and Gmail. And through Android Market, you'll get access to thousands of useful applications, widgets, and fun games to download and install on your phone, with many more apps being added every day.

Google Integration
  • Android Market for browsing and downloading thousands of free and paid apps
  • Pre-loaded Android apps: Browser, Calculator, Calendar (Google or Corporate), Camera, Clock, Contacts, Email, Gallery, Messaging, Music, News & Weather, Phone, Settings, Video Player, Voice Dialer, Voice Search, YouTube
  • Google applications: Gmail, Google Search, Google Voice Search, Google Latitude, Google Maps, Google Places, Google Talk
  • Google Maps Navigation with spoken turn-by-turn directions showing real-time traffic and 360° views of the destination

Galaxy S II Skyrocket & Vivid to Get Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrade in 2012

Monday admin

[AT&T Confirms Android 4.0 ICS Upgrade For Its Two Android LTE Smartphones, Made by Samsung & HTC]

A few days ago AT&T announced two Android 4G LTE smartphones, the Samasung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and the HTC Vivid, which will both be available in stores staring with November 6. Since they will both come with Gingerbread on board, one of the first questions that comes to mind is when will they be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich?

Apparently AT&T confirmed that both the Skyrocket and the Vivid will get their ICS builds at some point in 2012, but the carrier didn’t actually specify exact details about an ICS roll out. Of course it’s up to Samsung and HTC, respectively, to deliver the updates, and considering that Android OS upgrades do not always come in a timely fashion, I wouldn’t hold my breath on a very early ICS upgrade for these phones.
Like most Android makers, Samsung and HTC are yet to detail their ICS roll-out plans for their current line-ups, but we would assume that at least their most recent smartphones will run Google’s latest Android OS version. By comparison, Motorola has already confirmed ICS upgrade plans for the Droid RAZR, Droid Bionic and Xoom tablet, but the company will offer more detailed information six weeks after ICS becomes official.
AT&T’s Skyrocket and Vivid are meant to fight against Verizon’s recently announced LTE handsets, the Galaxy Nexus, the Droid RAZR and the HTC Rezound, although it looks like Verizon is winning this battle considering the increased hype around its upcoming LTE smartphones.
The Skyrocket and Vivid do offer some very interesting specs and features, so if Verizon is not your favorite carrier and you are interested in a 4G LTE smartphone you may want to check them out. The HTC Vivid will cost $199.99 with a two-year agreement while the Skyrocket is priced at $249.99, also on contract. And yes, AT&T’s LTE smartphones happen to be cheaper than either one of Verizon’s trio (each priced at $299.99 with a contract).
Is ICS a favor when choosing your next Android smartphone? Will you buy the Galaxy Nexus or a Gingerbread-running handset this holiday season?

LTE Data Plans

Customers can choose from tiered data plans starting as low as $15 per month. Existing smartphone customers do not have to make changes to their data plan. All plans include access to AT&T’s national Wi-Fi network of more than 29,000 hotspots.

DataPlus provides 200 megabytes (MB) of data for just $15 per month. An additional 200 MB of data usage is $15.
DataPro provides 2 gigabytes (GB) of data for $25 per month. An additional 1 GB of data is $10. Customers who want to use their device as a mobile hotspot can sign up for DataPro 4GB for $45 a month, which lets you tether or share your data connection across multiple devices.

LTE Deployments

AT&T continues to expand its 4G LTE footprint. The four markets launching Nov. 6 join Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio, which were launched in September. AT&T is the only U.S. carrier providing 4G service using both HSPA+ and LTE. HSPA+, when combined with enhanced backhaul, provides customers with 4G speeds, meaning customers get a faster and more consistent 4G experience, even when outside of an AT&T LTE area. Customers of other carriers that have transitioned to 4G LTE without further speed upgrades to their existing networks are likely to see a jarring drop-off in speeds when they move out of LTE coverage.

Quotes

“The two LTE-powered superphones will be our 20th and 21st Android devices in 2011, adding to an outstanding year of Android success,” said David Christopher, chief marketing officer, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. “We’ve far exceeded our commitment to offer 12 new Android devices this year –now including our first 4G LTE smartphones. We’re delivering an incredible amount of innovation to our customers, which is a huge reason why more than half our post-paid subscribers are using a smartphone.”

“We are thrilled to continue growing our relationship with AT&T and excited for the HTC Vivid to be one of the first LTE devices on AT&T for the holiday season,” said Jason Mackenzie, president of global sales and marketing, HTC. “The HTC Vivid combines an exceptional display in a premium device that delivers a powerful smartphone to our customers through AT&T’s fast LTE and HSPA+ 4G networks.”

“AT&T’s LTE network allows for quicker access, smoother streaming and faster web experiences, especially when using the powerful Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket,” said Todd Pendleton, chief marketing officer, Samsung Telecommunications America. “Pairing the Galaxy S II Skyrocket with AT&T’s LTE speeds, creates the ultimate smartphone experience.”

AT&T: ‘tremendous, tremendous demand’ for iPhone 3GS

admin

With the iPhone 3GS now available for free with new cell phone contracts, are people still interested in the aging device? After all, the 3GS has been on the market for more than two years, eclipsed by the iPhone 4 and, most recently, the 4S. Turns out the answer is an emphatic yes, according to AT&T.

AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega said in a statement that the iPhone 4S is selling like hotcakes. But in a discussion with analysts to talk about AT&T’s most recent financial report, de la Vega is also very positive about the contributions Apple’s iPhone 3GS continues to make to his company’s bottom line.

In a Q&A with analysts, de la Vega said:

I also mentioned in my notes that we have another device that I think is going to dramatically change those people that are on smartphones and quick messaging devices, the 3GS, which is free with a 2-year contract. We’ve seen a tremendous, tremendous demand for that device even though it’s a generation old. And actually, we’re getting more new subscribers coming on the 3GS on the average than other devices. So we also have an inventory sold out on that device. So I’m very, very optimistic on what the fourth quarter is going to look like in terms of smartphone growth.
