360° video recording using six Xperia™ neo phones

Sony Ericsson’s experimental hub Xperia Studio recently collaborated with photographer and inventor Joergen Geerds to shoot an impressive 360° panoramic video of the Slickrock trails in Moab, Utah. Check out the cool results in the video above!
Xperia Studio also met up with Joergen and software engineer Daniel Finkler to find out how they solved the hardware and software challenges involved. More videos and information about this are available after the jump.
To create the video, the team sync’d together six Xperia™ neo phones and mounted them to the handlebars of a bike. As no cradle existed for that many neo phones, Joergen had to build one from scratch, using an Ultimaker 3D printer. You can play with the interactive 360° video on XperiaStudio.com.
Of course, shooting a 360° video using six Xperia™ phones isn’t a simple job, and that’s where software engineer Daniel Finkler came in. Sony announced a new digital photo frame S-Frame with Wi-Fi and touch screen

Sony has announced the completion of its line of digital photo frames with new S-Frame models with WiFi and a 7-inch touch screen: DPF-WA700 and DPF-W700, which will automatically download pictures for friends from Facebook, according to users' privacy settings, as well as take pictures e-mail.

Thus, the new frame can display photos stored on a home computer user, display the weather forecast AccuWeather and play Internet radio (only model DPF-WA700).

Characteristics of the new digital photo frame DPF-WA700 and DPF-W700 include 2 GB of internal memory, memory card slots for MS Duo / SD / SDHC. In addition, model DPF-WA700 is also able to play music files as background music during a slide show and video format AVCHD.

New models of digital photo frames Sony S-Frame DPF-WA700 and DPF-W700 will be available in Russia in January 2011. Estimated cost: DPF-WA700 - 6990 rub., DPF-W700 - 4490 rubles.

Greenpeace Guide to Greener Electronics

Today Greenpeace released the 17th version of its Guide to Greener Electronics. In the guide they have ranked 15 manufacturers of personal computers, mobile phones and TVs according to the following categories; Energy and Climate, Greener Products and Sustainable Operations. Sony Ericsson was ranked 6th place, scoring 4.2 out of 10, placing us at the top amongst the Android™ smartphone players.
In this edition, Greenpeace has changed the scoring system, introduced tougher requirements and updated many criteria. New criteria were also added, raising the bar for the manufacturers. Overall, the new ranking has stronger focus on energy and climate issues.
We welcome the Greenpeace ranking and appreciate the feedback on our sustainability work as it highlights our strengths and room for improvements. We are one of the top scorers in the products category, where we received maximum scores on energy efficiency of our phones and for our advice to users to increase efficiency. We also scored high on avoidance of hazardous substances. Areas were we need to improve according to the report are amongst others renewable energy, greenhouse gas emission reduction targets, utilization of post-consumer recycled plastics and information about recycling. Going forward we will work even harder, not only in the identified, but in all areas of sustainability. We welcome your feed-back and comments on the report and our sustainability work.

Getting started with Timescape™ extensions

Ready to take your Android™ development one step further? Do you want your app to get visible to thousands of Sony Ericsson phones? Haven’t checked out the Timescape™ developer section yet? If so, then follow along with Sony Ericsson Software Engineer, Robert Helmbro, as he’s provided this step-by-step tutorial for developing your own Timescape™ extension.

Over the past few months, we’ve been giving you some important information and tools to help you learn about Timescape™ extensions, including articles on how to develop Timescape™ extensions and use the Extension Development Kit, along with special sections on Developer Word dedicated to Timescape extensions and the Extension Development Kit (EDK). In case you missed all of this, you will get a new chance now as Robert Helmbro will guide you in how to create your very own Timescape™ extension – an excellent way to get visibility in Sony Ericsson phones.
Starting with the 2011 Xperia™ phones and the updated software on the Xperia™ X10, you’ll be able to develop your own extensions for the Timescape™ application, Sony Ericsson’s unique feature that displays Facebook™, Twitter™, text messages, e-mails and alerts from your contacts as a flowing column on the home screen. And to help you develop your own Timescape™ app extension, we’ve got the Extension Development Kit (EDK) that includes all the necessary tools and documentation.

If you already have a bit of Android™ development knowledge, you’ll find it fairly easy to create your own Timescape™ extensions. If you’re still a bit new to Android™ development, no worries, just familiarise yourself first with the Android development documentation mentioned below.
What is a Timescape™ extension?
For those of you who are new to the Timescape™ world, a Timescape™ extension is an Android™ application that provides Timescape™ connected UIs with content through a specified API.
The API is called Event Stream API, which can be thought of as a database of time-centric content. The extensions put content into the database. Then the visualisation application, such as the Timescape™ application, Infinite view or Timescape™-widget, presents the content to the user in an integrated way.

Prerequisites for creating a Timescape™ extension
You should have basic knowledge about Android™ application development. Such things as intents, broadcast events and content providers are central concepts in extension development. It is also assumed that Eclipse with the Android development tools (ADT) plug-in is up and running.
Documentation and sample code
Now, let’s get to the heart of this tutorial. First, download some documentation and code examples. This is, and more information about it, is available from the EDK developer section on Developer World. Download the Timescape™ code examples and documentation to get started. Once you’ve extracted the zip file, you’ll find the following content:
RSSExtension – A sample extension with some attached documentation, intended for RSS type of extensions.
SocialNetworkSample – A sample extension with some attached documentation. This sample is made to give an example of how a social network example can be made.
SampleExtension – A sample extension with some attached documentation.
EventStream_API.zip – Javadocs for the Event Stream API.
Introduction_Timescape_extensions.pdf – Contains some basic information.
SEMC_Xperia_Events_overview.pdf – Documentation about the visualisation application Xperia™ Events.
Timescape_icon_design_guideline.pdf – Guidelines about icons needed in an extension.
A good starting point is to read the Javadoc for the Event Stream API. Extract the EventStream_API.zip. Go to the EventStream_API folder and open the index.html file in your favourite browser. Read carefully about the EventStream class. This will give you a good overview of how Timescape™ extensions work.
Downloading the Extension Development Kit
You are now probably excited for some hands on programming. Maybe you’re ready to look at the sample extensions and start modifying the code to try out your ideas, but hang on a little while longer.
As mentioned before, Sony Ericsson has created the Extension Development Kit (EDK) that can be used while developing extensions. The EDK consists of an emulator add-on containing, among other things, the Event Stream API and two visualization applications – Xperia™ Events and Infinite view. You can find out more about these applications later in the text. To install the EDK and create an Android Virtual Device (AVD), follow the “Installing the EDK” instructions on the EDK developer section.
You should now be able to start an emulator with your newly created configuration (AVD) by following the steps below:
In Eclipse, press Window > Android SDK and AVD Manager.
Select your new AVD and press Start.
Wait for the emulator to boot up and then scroll the main menu and you will find the application Xperia™ Events.
Xperia™ Events is a tool for testing Timescape™ extensions. Events are shown in a similar way as they will be shown on a real device. Now launch Xperia™ Events. You will only see an almost empty screen, since there are no extensions installed yet.

Using the Social network sample extension
In order to fill Xperia™ Events with some content, let’s try out the Social network sample extension.
Browse to the SocialNetworkSample folder from EdkSnsSampleApp1.zip.
Create an Android project in Eclipse: File > New > Project… > Android > Android Project.
Set the ‘Create project from existing source’ checkbox and navigate to your recently extracted folder containing SocialNetworkSample.
Check EDK 1.1 as Build Target and press Finish.
Install the SocialNetworkSample to the emulator by right clicking the newly created project and press Run As > Android Application.
Now launch Xperia™ Events in the emulator again. A new tab should be present. Follow these steps:
Press the new tab and then press Add account.
Press ‘SNS Sample extension – Register your account information’. Enter any user name and password you like and press Sign In.
Press back to see the dummy stream of events generated by the extension.
Try to press an event to see the detail view of it. At the bottom of the screen, it is possible to scroll all data in the database for this event entry. This is really useful when developing extensions. Also try to press the Infinite icon at the top right corner. What you should see now is the Infinite view. Infinite view is the detailed view of a contact. This shows everything related to the selected contact collected. For example, your extension gets its own tab with all events from the current friend.
Time for coding
Similar procedures could be done with the RSSExtension and SampleExtension. Some documentation is attached to all sample extensions. If you would like to create your own extension by modifying one of the sample extensions, I would recommend selecting the RSSExtension since it is most complete.
Hopefully, this has given you enough information for you to start a prototype of your own extension. When you’re ready, download the EDK and give it a go. If you have any questions, just post them in the EDK thread on Google groups, which we will monitor and get back with answers as soon as possible. Happy coding!

Sony Ericsson Nozomi in photographs

We have already reported that the next leader of the Sony Ericsson device should be LT26i Nozomi, but now the Internet a photograph of a real prototype device. For the first time the existence of the project became known in August and then it became known that the machine will be running the Android operating system and receive a dual core processor. It was assumed that this machine is already out of the Japanese operator NTT DoCoMo as SO-02D, it is built on a processor with 1.4 GHz and has a 4.3-inch touch screen. Now came the precise information. Unfortunately, still not much is known about the characteristics. It is reported that dual-core processor will have a frequency of 1.5 GHz, while the amount of RAM to 1GB. The main part of the front panel is a 4.3-inch cock, whose resolution is 1280 by 720 pixels. In the photo also shows that the device Sony Ericsson Nozomi currently runs on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. However, based on the design, which effectively removed the keys, then the market model may come out with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

With the 2.3.4 update, you will have access to Sony Entertainment Network, the entertainment content service Sony recently announced, and which will open your possibility of entertainment on the go on your Xperia™ smartphone.
On the Xperia™ phones, you will have Music Unlimited, that will let you listen to millions on songs from all major labels on your Xperia™ smartphone and other devices you have at home. You can sync your personal music library and play from the cloud, listen to new songs, create your own playlists and listen to music channels based on your mood with no ads and unlimited skips. I use Music Unlimited a lot, as it has my whole music library, and I can access through the Xperia™ ray I am using, so I can listen to my music in my car, or I access my library through the PlayStation 3 at my house.
Video Unlimited lets you watch thousands of movies from all major studios on your Xperia™ smartphone and other screens you have at home. You can buy or rent the movie you want to watch on your phone, when you are waiting on line or commuting, or later connect your Xperia through HDMI to your screen so you watch it in a bigger screen, in your house.
Both services are only available in certain initial markets, but we will keep you posted when they reach other markets.
Music Unlimited is only available in France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Australia, United States of America, Ireland and New Zealand; and Video Unlimited is available in France, Italy, Germany, Great Britain, Spain, Australia, United States of America, Japan and Canada.

Amazing 3D and 2D panorama pictures with your Xperia™ phone

As the great video our colleagues in Developer World made about the features you are getting in your Xperia™ 2011 Phones with the latest 2.3.4 Gingerbread update shows us, you will get great Camera enhancements.
First of all, you will get the world´s first 3D Sweep panorama functionality powered by Sony in Smartphones.
This means you will be able to take panoramic pictures in 3D (and 2D) with your Xperia™ Smartphone by selecting the function, and just moving your phone from left to right in a sweeping mode, letting the phone take the picture automatically, so that you obtain great panoramic pictures from the places you love.

The way the 3D Panorama Sweep works is that the phone camera uses the sweep motion to take a great amount of pictures in a row, then puts them them together and calculates two single pictures, that actually show the same scenery, but from two slightly different angles. The pictures are combined into one .mpo file (Multi Picture Object), that can be interpreted by 3D capable devices, such as your 3D HD screen, by connecting your phone via HDMI. Although, we can´t show you the real 3D experience thought the sample pictures we are posting, it is an amazing thing to see your pictures really come to live through your 3D screen.
The 3D Sweep panorama function will not be available for Xperia™ PLAY, but will be available for the rest of the Xperia™ 2011 portfolio. Xperia™ PLAY will get HD video recording with the 2.3.4 Android upgrade.
Also, all the Xperia™ phones will get an enhancement on the zoom capabilities of the camera for video recording, with a 16x video zoom.

Sony Ericsson has launched Xperia™ Studio, an online entertainment platform for artists and collaborators to create and share their most innovative content. The initiative reflects Sony Ericsson’s ongoing commitment to engage with consumers through high-quality entertaining content to inspire them to explore their Xperia™ phones in new ways.

Remaking Reality:
The Sony Ericsson’s Xperia™ Studio invites creative thinkers, artists and intellectuals – from collaborative artists in Denmark to astrophysicists in New York – to take the range of Xperia™ handsets to their absolute limits and ultimately ‘remake reality’. Krusell: Samsung Galaxy S II more popular than iPhone 4 iPhone 4S

October top list of phone accessories from Swedish manufacturer has demonstrated that the struggle between Samsung and Apple's popularity among users of the most technically advanced smartphone flaring up brightly. Despite the fact that in October, has begun selling iPhone 4S, the flagship of Samsung's managed to keep the leading position in the ranking. Both devices from Apple in the top 10 include, but are located on the second (iPhone 4) and fifth (iPhone 4S) ground.
