Controversial iPhone app security bug fixed in iOS 5.0.1

Friday admin

The security flaw that led to security researcher Charlie Miller getting kicked out of Apple's developer program has been patched in the company's latest iOS update.
That flaw, which let apps phone home to download potentially malicious unsigned code, thus changing the behavior of an application, is listed as one of the security fixes in iOS 5.0.1, which went out to users today.
"A logic error existed in the mmap system call's checking of valid flag combinations. This issue may lead to a bypass of codesigning checks," Apple posted in a security document coinciding with the new software this morning. "This issue does not affect devices running iOS prior to version 4.3," it read, crediting Miller as the finder of the issue.
Miller, who is a researcher with Accuvant Labs posted his initial findings of the flaw earlier this week in an interview with Forbes to promote a demonstration of his method at the SysCan conference, which takes place in Taiwan next week.
Despite Miller having sent Apple his findings three weeks prior to publicizing the issue, the company responded by terminating Miller's developer license, saying that he violated two parts of the agreement that cover interfering with Apple's software and services, and hiding features from the company when submitting them.
The boot came with a one-year ban from reapplying to Apple's iOS Developer Program.
Miller declined to comment on what's happened since that decision, and what he plans to show off at Syscan now that the issue's been addressed. In a tweet this morning, Miller said "even if some thought what I did was unethical, I hope public reporting of that flaw sped up time to patch release to make things safe for us."

Apple’s Share of the 2011 Tablet Market: 75 Percent or More

Monday admin

With its competitors unable to field a true iPad rival, Apple’s tablet continues to dominate the market that it created. The company sold 11.1 million iPads in the September quarter, accounting for about three-quarters of all tablets sold to consumers. And with a true competitor yet to emerge, that dominance will likely persist for some time, further reinforced by the upcoming holiday shopping season.
Says Canaccord Genuity’s T. Michael Walkley, “We anticipate very strong sales of the iPad 2 for the holiday quarter, and we are modeling iPad units ramping from 11.1 million units in the September quarter to 14.0 million units in the December quarter.”

That’s a lot of iPads. And keep in mind that the December quarter will see the debut of Amazon’s new Kindle Fire tablet, which some view as a challenger to the iPad, though Walkley doesn’t see it that way.
“While new entrants such as Amazon could disrupt the completive dynamics into holiday sales, we view low-priced 7-inch models as a threat to other Android OEMs rather than to the iPad,” he says. “As such, given our updated iPad estimates, we anticipate Apple will command roughly 65 percent of the tablet units sold into the channel during C2011. However, we believe Apple’s sell-through share of the tablet market will exceed 75 percent during C2011.”
It’s looking more and more like Apple’s iPad will follow the same story arc as the iPod, achieving and maintaining market dominance despite its high-end product trappings.

Mozilla developers building entirely web based mobile OS

admin

Mozilla is working on a new entirely web based operating system called Boot 2 Gecko. Pics of the B2G interface appeared on the Mozilla wiki and show an icon based OS, not unlike Apple's.

Developers are currently testing B2G and its "proprietary, single-vendor stacks". They are building new APIs for things like camera, telephone and SMS capabilities.

Without getting too bogged down in technical details, Mozilla is essentially working on the basics of a mobile OS, like contacts and actual phone functionality. They are also getting everything ready for deadline and on track for what is said to be a product demo by the end of the year.

The first screens of the OS hint at some rather interesting ideas. Swiping icons to jump straight to an app, a la HTC Sense 3.5 is a particular favourite. There is also the ability to have either hardware or non-physical buttons for things like back and menu.

Last we heard from Mozilla on the OS was that it was going to be HTML5 powered and use Android just for booting and drivers.

Not much else is known about the Mozilla OS other than the above. One thing's for sure, it is a brave move entering into a mobile market as OS-saturated as the current. B2G is going to have to be pretty special in order to steal any of the limelight away from Android, iOS and WP7.

Apple Confirms iOS 5 Bugs Causing Battery Issues for Some iPhones

admin

Apple on Wednesday said it had found a few problems that are leading some iPhone customers to experience less-than-expected battery life with iPhones running its latest software.

“A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices,” Apple said in a statement to AllThingsD. “We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.”
Apple declined to comment beyond the statement.
Complaints about battery life issues have been growing on the Web in recent days, but began shortly after both iOS 5 and the iPhone 4S were made publicly available last month.
The problems appear to vary based on what network a user is on, usage patterns and other factors.
While Apple has been mum until now about the issues, its support forums have been filled with postings on the issue. And, although Apple is not offering any advice on what customers should do until the software update is released, those same forums contain various potential fixes that may help. Some customers have found some success by limiting notifications and by turning off a feature that automatically adjusts to new time zones.
Despite the battery issues, the iPhone 4S has been a huge seller, with Sprint and AT&T setting records for initial sales.

Android vs. iPhone: Different OS, different habits

Friday admin

Did you know that Android users are actually more likely to be active on music web sites than iPhone owners? Or, that feature phone users are the most active social web users? These stats and more are available in this month’s State of the Mobile Web report where we take a look at the differences between web usage for Android, iPhone, Blackberry, Windows Phone and feature phones users. Anonymous, aggregated data from the AdMarvel Open Audience Network show the differences in surfing habits between the different mobile platforms.

Some differences include:

Windows Phone users are more likely to visit email and communications sites compared to users of other platforms.
Are Android users more educated than users of the other platforms? Maybe, as they are the biggest group in the Education category. Education includes the websites for universities and general education.
Android users are the least likely to visit social media websites using their browser.
The data comes from statistics produced by the Opera Mini mobile web browser, a cloud-based browser currently in use by more than 131 million users each month. Read the full State of the Mobile Web report; check out the top categories and how each platform fares in each category of the interactive list.

Focus on Europe

Each month, the State of the Mobile Web report has a closer look at one out of six regions for a traffic analysis. This month, we focus on Europe. The top 10 countries using the Opera Mini browser in this region are the United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Romania, Serbia, France, Hungary and Czech Republic. Note: High-ranking countries such as Belarus and Russia are counted under CIS, not Europe.

For September, Hungary and Romania led the growth race for the greatest number of Opera Mini users, while Hungary and Serbia showed the most page-view growth. For the most data-hungry countries, Hungary and Spain topped the list, meaning they viewed the most data-intensive pages, e.g., sites with lots of pictures.

During September, Opera Mini users accessed 11.6 petabytes of uncompressed data — that’s six times more than the total storage capacity of the human brain (or, one ninth of the android robot Data in “Star Trek: The Next Generation”, according to statistics search engine Wolfram Alpha).

Apple gets patent for ‘unlock gesture’

Wednesday admin

Jobs slides back the granite slab for one more whack at Android

A US Patent granted today (October 25) will send Google and Android phone makers around the world reaching for their lawyers.

Patent 8,046,721 is quite dull, but all-embracing in that special way that patents have become in America: “A device with a touch-sensitive display may be unlocked via gestures performed on the touch-sensitive display. The device is unlocked if contact with the display corresponds to a predefined gesture for unlocking the device. The device displays one or more unlock images with respect to which the predefined gesture is to be performed in order to unlock the device. The performance of the predefined gesture with respect to the unlock image may include moving the unlock image to a predefined location and/or moving the unlock image along a predefined path. The device may also display visual cues of the predefined gesture on the touch screen to remind a user of the gesture.”

Read it again if you need to, but to The Register’s admittedly non-lawyer eyes, it looks like this. If you:

• Unlock a device using a gesture on a touch-sensitive display;

• Display an icon telling punters they have to unlock the device;

• Design the icon to tell users which direction they have to swipe the icon to unlock the device; or

• Provide visual cues for users too dumb to remember the unlock gesture;

…then you’d be breaching the patent.

While The Register can’t speak for every single Android phone or tablet in the world – not to mention other flavours of device – the one’s we can immediately call to mind use unlock gestures pretty much like the ones described in this patent.
