New Yahoo! Mobile/Razorfish Study Finds Smartphones Are Most Popular Home Device, and Growing Scapegoat in Many Social Situations

Thursday admin

In an always-on, connected world with a surplus of new devices fit for every function, location and context it's no surprise that mobile phones are helping people multi-task and even duck out of awkward situations. A recent Yahoo! Mobile/Razorfish study reveals interesting gender differences in usage and ranks the smartphone as the highest rated device in the home with 75% of votes.

The more than 2,000 U.S. respondents that participated in the study were asked questions on their multi-tasking habits and device preferences, bringing to light some interesting trends and valuable insights.

Mobile phone scapegoat: The study found 52% of consumers use their mobile device to escape awkward situations. Women are more likely to use their phone as an excuse than men.
No need to stop & ask for directions: Overall men (59%) are using their web-enabled mobile devices most frequently for navigational purposes.
Are you ready for some football?: Men were almost twice as likely to say that checking their mobile for sports news causes arguments with their significant other (29%) compared to women (17%).
Smartphone is the new fact checker: 58% of men are ‘fact checking' on their mobile web browser while at a live sporting event, with nearly half (47%) checking out scores of other games and players.
Did you see that?: An overwhelming 90% said that multi-tasking on their smartphone (while watching live TV & commercials) was to communicate with others (via text or phone).
Laptop vs. tablet: Over three quarters (77%) of content searched for on laptop/desktop devices while watching TV is NOT related to the show they are watching. However, over half (57%) of people multi-tasking on tablets are searching for related content.
The more inquisitive female: Young women are the prime demographic to surf the Internet related to what they're watching (65% of women under the age of 35, compared to 47% of men of the same age).
The gender divide: Men are more likely to use their mobile device as a functional, all- in-one tool; whereas women are more likely to use it as an extension of the traditional phone, to update and connect with friends across their social networks on the go.
Mobile shopping is a man's world: Online purchases on smartphones are more popular with men (70% under 35 years) than with women (64% under 35 years).

According to Yahoo! Shopping the top searched mobile phones are:

1. iPhone 4s

2. Samsung Galaxy s2

3. Samsung Galaxy Nexus

4. Motorola Razr

5. Nokia n9

Yahoo!, Microsoft and AOL Announce Display Advertising Agreements

Wednesday admin

Partnership to benefit advertisers, agencies and publishers, provide more efficient access to premium online ad inventory.

Yahoo! (NASDAQ:YHOO), Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) and AOL (NYSE: AOL) announced agreements that should dramatically improve the process of buying and selling premium online display inventory. The agreements will allow ad networks operated by Yahoo!, Microsoft and AOL to offer each other's premium nonreserved online display inventory to their respective advertising customers.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20000822/MSFTLOGO)

While agencies and advertisers can continue to choose to partner across Yahoo! Network Plus, AOL's Advertising.com and the Microsoft Media Network (each of which is differentiated by its capabilities around data, optimization, packaging and inventory), this partnership will also offer the efficiency of buying premium display inventory at scale to reach customers and audiences. Simultaneously, the partnership should enhance the demand for and value of each party's display advertising offerings as well as provide better yield for both participating publishers and advertisers.

"We're thrilled to partner with Microsoft and AOL and bring to market what we believe will be a more efficient, effective and more effortless way to access true premium inventory and formats," said Ross Levinsohn, Yahoo! executive vice president Americas. "There has a been a significant shift in how inventory is bought and sold, and we're now 100 percent focused on controlling our own destiny, working directly with marketers and agencies and driving better returns for our advertising partners."

"Enhancing choice and scale in today's display advertising market is 'a rising tide that lifts all boats'," said Rik van der Kooi, corporate vice president of the Microsoft Advertising Business Group. "This partnership will create an opportunity where advertisers and publishers alike can benefit from easier access to — and demand for — high-quality inventory. The fact that we're joining together to offer this kind of access to quality — yet each with our own differentiated ad offerings — is something that will benefit the market as a whole."

"We are excited to be part of this partnership," said Ned Brody, chief revenue officer, AOL. "Today's announcement sets in motion the opportunity for advertisers to achieve scaled solutions across premium publishers. This should reduce friction in the marketplace, which will benefit both advertisers and publishers. And this partnership will take our existing Advertising.com partnerships with both Microsoft and Yahoo! to a new level."

By integrating one another's real-time bidding (RTB) technologies to facilitate the availability of nonreserved inventory by early 2012, Yahoo!, Microsoft and AOL expect to have the opportunity to access each other's nonreserved inventory to achieve the benefits of scale and efficiency. The Microsoft Advertising Exchange and Yahoo's! Right Media Exchange will initially serve as the two marketplaces from which the partners can procure this inventory for resale to advertisers and agencies. AOL may, at its discretion, opt to use its own exchange technology solution subsequent to the launch of the partnership.

Under the terms of the nonexclusive agreements, each company will continue to make its own decisions, differentiate its offerings and set its own controls for how it operates any exchanges, ad networks or other aspects of its display businesses. They will actively compete with each other for both advertiser spend and publisher partners based on their own unique product differentiators.

Effective in the United States, the partnership is based on the premise of audience-based selling across a large number of sites and is not expected to affect direct sales made by each partner's respective internal teams. In addition to the United States, Yahoo! and AOL will have an agreement that extends to Canada. Microsoft's Canada business is not participating directly in the agreement.

Before the interviews, ABC News and Yahoo! solicited questions from consumers leading up to the event so that their voices, questions and concerns about key issues could be heard and answered by the candidates.

Yahoo! and ABC News will also collaborate on an original daily politics video program featuring the unmatched talent of the ABC News political team, including George Stephanopoulos, Jonathan Karl, Jake Tapper, John Berman, Amy Walter and others. It will launch with the key primary season.

Moving beyond traditional opinion polling, The Signal will capture the national mood and project what is likely to happen as the campaign unfolds, providing up-to-the minute predictions, sentiment, games, and commentary. The blog focuses on presenting efficient, real-time predictions and sentiment analysis from top experts in predictive modeling, providing an invaluable resource with which to follow and track the elections.

A beta version of the blog debuted today, and a more robust site and dynamic content will come online throughout the winter and spring. Authored by Yahoo! Labs' scientists David Rothschild and David Pennock, as well as other academics and assorted experts on predictions and data, The Signal blog will be accompanied by more sophisticated data visualizations in December and experimental games and polling will provide an interactive element in the coming months.

Acquisition Extends Yahoo!'s Audience Targeting Capabilities and Premium Content Supply

Yahoo! Inc. (NASDAQ:YHOO), the premier digital media company, and interclick, inc. (NASDAQ:ICLK) announced a definitive agreement for Yahoo! to acquire interclick. interclick's proprietary advertising and technology solutions enable it to dramatically improve data targeted solutions and optimized returns for advertisers across a variety of pooled premium supply sources. interclick has built the industry's leading data valuation platform optimized to work with large data volumes across multiple providers and marketplaces. With interclick, Yahoo! will acquire unique data targeting capabilities, optimization technologies and new premium supply, as well as a team experienced in selling audiences across disparate sources of pooled supply.

"This investment underscores our focus on enhancing the performance of both our guaranteed and non-guaranteed display business across Yahoo and our partner sites and, combined with Yahoo!'s reach and advertising leadership, will deliver a powerful solution for marketers," said Ross Levinsohn, EVP, Americas region. "interclick's innovative platform will allow Yahoo! to expand its targeting and data capabilities to deliver campaigns with stronger performance metrics."

interclick helps marketers navigate the complex data online ecosystem with tools such as Open Segment Manager (OSM) and its Genome Platform. These solutions were built to address the fundamental challenges of audience targeting by enabling a more holistic understanding of consumers through its deep integrations with leading data providers.

"Having worked closely with Yahoo! for the past few years, we have a deep appreciation of the quality of the inventory that Yahoo! brings to market. The combination of Yahoo!'s premium data and inventory with our platforms will create tremendous value for clients," said Michael Katz, founder and CEO of interclick. "I would personally like to thank our team, our clients and our Board who helped to make interclick the success it has become."

"We believe that this is a great outcome for our shareholders," said Michael Brauser, interclick Co-Chairman of the Board. "Michael Katz and his team have done a tremendous job over the past few years and I'm proud to have helped make this outcome a reality."

Tender Offer

Under the terms of the agreement, Yahoo! will commence an all cash tender offer for all outstanding shares of common stock of interclick at $9.00 per share. The transaction has an estimated total equity value of approximately $270 million.

The transaction was unanimously approved by the interclick Board of Directors and all interclick directors and executive officers have entered into agreements with Yahoo! to support the transaction and to tender their shares in the offer.

The companies expect the tender offer to close by early 2012. The closing of the tender offer is subject to customary terms and conditions, including the tender of a number of shares which is at least a majority of the total number of outstanding interclick common shares (determined on a fully diluted basis), the expiration or termination of the waiting period under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act and other conditions set forth in the agreement. The agreement also provides for a merger to be completed following the tender offer which would result in all shares not tendered being converted into the right to receive $9.00 in cash.

GCA Savvian Advisors, LLC acted as the lead financial advisor to interclick in connection with the transaction.
