MARKING INDUSTRY MILESTONE FOR HIGH BANDWIDTH, SUBSEA CONNECTIVITY
Hibernia Atlantic, the only US owned, diverse transatlantic high bandwidth connectivity provider, Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, and Huawei Marine, a global submarine solutions supplier, announce they have successfully completed the first 100G transatlantic connection between Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada to Southport, England. This test was historic in nature; this is the highest capacity connection ever transmitted across the Atlantic Ocean. The success of this trial is allowing the companies to move forward on their aggressive deployment schedule, including 100 Gbps connections between Halifax and Montreal and between Amsterdam and London by Q1 2012, followed by other key routes later in the year.
The trial involved Huawei's latest 100 Gbps single wavelength coherent technology. This Optical Interoperability Forum (OIF) standards compliant technology utilizes innovative Digital Signal Processing (DSP) algorithms and next generation Forward Error Correction (FEC) enabling high capacity transport across transatlantic distances. In addition to performing across distances greater than 5,000 km, the trial has successfully demonstrated long-term, error-free transmission at 100Gbps. Additionally, transmission with existing Huawei 40 Gbps wavelengths at 50 GHz spacing was achieved, allowing for a smooth and seamless bandwidth upgrade. Huawei also successfully demonstrated co-propagation of 100 Gbps wavelengths at 50 GHz spacing which enables future upgrades of subsea capacities up to 5 Tbps.
This 100 Gbps technology is available on Huawei's OptiX product series which is a next generation, intelligent, Optical Transport Network (OTN) platform scalable to over 6 Tbps of switching capacity. Hibernia Atlantic is using this equipment to upgrade their existing secure and diverse cable system. “In partnership with Hibernia Atlantic, Huawei has developed the OptiX products with 100 Gbps capability to address exponentially increasing bandwidth demand driven by cutting-edge data services and high definition video,” states Charlie Chen, Senior Vice President of Marketing for Huawei Technologies USA.
"Additional capacity to our existing network system will provide the ability to meet the growing service needs of our clients," continues Bjarni Thorvardarson, Chief Executive Officer for Hibernia Atlantic. Huawei and Beltelecom Successfully Test 100G Coherent Transmission on Beltelecom's Live Network

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced that it successfully tested the first 100G coherent transmission on the live network of Beltelecom, a national telecommunications operator of the Republic of Belarus.
The trial was performed on a link in the Beltelecom backbone WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) network that connects Russia and Poland and travels across Belarus. During the trial, 100G services were transmitted together with existing 10G and 40G services over the same fiber, while achieving non-regeneration transmission over a distance of 900 kilometers.
Beltelecom had been facing several challenges in meeting the increasing demands for FTTx (Fiber to the x) bandwidth access services and international bandwidth leasing services. Although ample 10G and 40G services had been deployed on the network using Huawei's OTN (Optical Transport Network) devices, the heavy demand on Beltelecom's network necessitated 100G ultra-high speed transmissions in order to quickly and effectively expand the network's capacity. To meet this need, Huawei and Beltelecom deployed this 100G coherent transmission test on Beltelecom's WDM network.
During the testing process, Huawei used the ePDM-QPSK (enhanced Polarization Division Multiplexing Quadrature Phase-Shift Keying) modulation technique, which is recognized as the single best modulation technique for 100G long-haul transmission. Without making any changes to the live Beltelecom network, Huawei successfully achieved transmissions of 10G, 40G, and 100G services over the same fiber, enabling every wavelength in the network to carry 100G services without adversely affecting existing 10G and 40G services. This achievement will help Beltelcom further leverage the investment it has already made in its current network.
Sergey Sivodedov, chief technical officer of Beltelecom, said, "Collaborating with Huawei in testing 100G coherent transmission has successfully demonstrated that the 100G transmission system is mature and ready for commercial applications. This solution will help us accelerate the building of ultra-broadband networks so that we can provide users with a wider range of services."

Huawei successfully demonstrated RCS-e on GSMA Rich Communications Ecosystem Euro Summit

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, successfully demonstrated its RCS-e(Rich Communication Suite-Enhanced)service in the GSMA(GSM Association) Rich Communications Ecosystem Euro Summit. Huawei showcased the RCS-e used on 3G and WiFi connections, the RCS-e Application Service and the IMS(IP multimedia subsystem) call technology.
The event attracted operators from 14 countries, including not only the nearby Baltic operators, but also operators from as far as France and Azerbaijan. In total about 100 operators and suppliers representatives gathered in Stockholm for a full-day agenda.
Huawei demonstrated its RCS-e client on a U8800 device in a Huawei IMS-based RCS service - the Wo Friends service, which is already deployed by China Unicom. While the Huawei RCS-e demonstration appealed to the present operators, the Wo Friends service gave them an even more dazzling experience as the unique and commercialized RCS-e-based service has never been exhibited by any other companies.
Most operators, as well as senior GSMA representatives joined Huawei for an open discussion on how to deploy RCS-e. During the discussion Huawei shared its experience in developing and testing IMS and RCS-e systems, which was valuable to the operators who are preparing their own RCS-e launches. Huawei also demonstrated support for the RCS-e slogan "It just works!" by committing to deliveries of a terminal with native, out of the box, built-in RCS-e service, another aspect of Huawei's product that operators found favorable.
Mr. Duan Chengen, President of Huawei Core Network Western Europe, said: "RCS is the natural evolution of voice and short messages. It's a very important solution from the Huawei portfolio. Huawei Introduces Its Next-Generation Green Modular Data Centers

Hou Jinlong, president of Huawei's energy and infrastructure product line, said: "The modular IDS series has developed as a new trend in the construction of data centers around the world. Together with our partners, Huawei is working on building a new generation of data center infrastructures, featuring unified planning, on-demand deployment, and low energy consumption. This new generation will help customers reduce the cost of operation by more than 30 percent, ushering in a new era in cloud computing."
To meet the increased service requirements that will result from the predicted increases in data usage globally, medium and large enterprises and operators will need to fully realize the importance of rapid deployment of broadband services and cloud-based data centers. The challenge lies in how to successfully combine high-performance computing and information processing with data center infrastructure to provide broadband information services for enterprises, while also reducing their energy consumption and costs.
Traditional data centers often fail to improve energy efficiency, expand flexibly as a business grows, and implement intelligent system management processes. In response to this, Huawei has introduced the next-generation intelligent data-center solution (IDS) series to help customers realize on-demand access to IT resources and conduct business operations efficiently. The series allows customers to avoid high capital expenditure and operating expenses caused by increased power consumption.
At the conference, Li Sanqi, CTO, IT product line, Huawei, explained that Huawei's core concept in the cloud-based data center infrastructure field was focused on intelligent management, high-density deployment, green energy saving, and flexible expansion. Huawei's modular IDS series includes the container-type (IDS1000) and building-type (IDS2000) modular data centers, which feature simplified designs to effectively reduce the need for large equipment rooms and environments.
The IDS1000 was designed for the outdoors and does not require equipment rooms, helping customers to reduce the construction phase from six months to two months. In addition, the power consumption of the IDS1000 is 50 percent less than that of traditional equipment rooms. It is suitable for locations that experience temperature extremes. As a result, the IDS1000 can support disaster relief, large events, and military operations.
The IDS2000 uses advanced cooling technology, including the separation of cold and hot air pipes, precise air supply, and outdoor cooling sources, to ensure a power usage effectiveness (PUE) value of less than 1.2. It features Huawei's iFOS intelligent management system, constructed based on a visible expert system, which dynamically adjusts the power supply and cooling capacity based on the workload of the cloud platform, realizing intelligent and interlocked management and refined operations of IT equipment and equipment room infrastructure. It is suitable for the modularized construction and expansion of medium and large data centers.

With the development of mobile broadband technologies, Huawei predicts that data traffic will increase over 500 times in the next decade. The current mobile network is facing a significant challenge to meet the huge capacity growth.
Based on a deep analysis of wireless networks, Huawei launched its innovative Small Cell solution which can deploy a precise layered network based on actual traffic distribution, offering seamless coverage in hot and blind spots to improve network capacity. This enables operators to protect network investment and decrease total cost of ownership through easy site acquisition, fast deployment, green design, multi-mode convergence and smooth evolution to LTE-Advanced.

Statement Regarding Inaccurate and Misleading Claims about Huawei's Commercial Operations in Iran

Recently, there has been a news report that grossly misrepresents the commercial activities that our company is carrying out in Iran. Huawei's work in Iran is no different than our work in any other market and we are only involved in the R&D, manufacturing and sales of telecommunications equipment that is for commercial and civilian use in Iran and other markets in which we operate. We have never been involved in and do not provide any services relating to monitoring or filtering technologies and equipment anywhere in the world.
In the interest of fact-based clarity, Huawei offers the following information to address some of the inaccurate statements included in that article:
As its telecom equipment supplier, Huawei provides a mobile news delivery platform to MTN Irancell, but we have no involvement in any aspect of the content of the information that is provided on that platform. Most importantly, we have absolutely no technology that can be used for news censorship.
Any Managed Services support we provide to MTN Irancell refers exclusively to the maintenance of equipment we supplied to this operator. Huawei is not capable of "overseeing"the network as reported in the article and we have no involvement in any type of monitoring and filtering activities.
Zaeim Electronic Industries, a non-exclusive re-seller of Huawei commercial telecom solutions in Iran, also works with many of our international competitors.
Contrary to what was reported, Huawei has no contracts with MCCI for any network services in the southern part of Iran and we do not provide any customer anywhere in the world with technologies or services that can track a user's location.
The article leaves readers with the impression that Huawei dominates Iran's telecommunications market and nothing could be further from the truth. Just this year, we lost two major contracts to our western competitors for commercial systems with two major telecommunications operators in Iran. Speaking today at The London Conference on Cyberspace, Ms. Chen Lifang, Senior Corporate Vice President of Huawei, said "ICT technology is critical to the sustainable development of the global economy and it is the responsibility of all stakeholders in the cyberspace arena to tackle the pressing global challenges of cyber security and reliable access for all in an open, transparent, and collaborative manner."
The London Conference on Cyberspace, hosted by the Rt Hon William Hague MP, the UK's Secretary of State for Foreign & Commonwealth Affairs, was launched this year to help shape the international debate and develop a better collective understanding of how to protect and preserve cyberspace among key members of government, industry and civil society. The ideas and proposals that emerge from the conference will develop into the 'London Agenda', a plan to help realize the full potential of cyberspace.
The United Nations Broadband Commission for Digital Development has established a vision of "Broadband Inclusion for All." But from another perspective, the rapid increase of broadband information has brought problems such as spam mail, network outages, hacker attacks, and network security issues. Network service failures, whether they are caused by natural disasters, energy supply disruptions, or by social unrest or riots, will lead to incalculable economic and livelihood losses.
"When it comes to the safety and security of cyber space, we face two major challenges today: ubiquitous and safe access and data security in the cloud," said Ms. Chen. "The ability to access the internet anytime, anywhere, from any device has increased the potential for threats to network security."

Huawei Wireless Growing up with Operators over Ten Years

The event has proved a great opportunity for Huawei R&D and service teams to directly interface with customers from around the world.
The 2011 User Group Meeting saw the announcement and first meeting of a currently seven member Advisory Board representing several of the world's leading operators. The board will help monitor key issue progress, provide guidance for the annual meeting and year round communications with members of the User Group.
The inaugural Wireless User Group Meeting was held last year. This second meeting saw a considerable increase in attention and attendance with more than 300 customers representing 70 operators around the world. With presentations from leading operators such as Vodafone Germany, China Mobile, Telecom France, TeliaSonera Norway, Telefonica Germany, no less than 22 speakers addressed the large international audience.
The 2011 event was also an occasion for celebrating the past decade of partnership cooperation with global operators. Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced that it had sequentially collaborated with top Russian operators such as Transtelecom, Rostelecom, Vimpelcom, and Megafon in testing and demonstration of the 2000 km ultra-long haul (ULH) 100G coherent WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) system at Huawei's 100G testing center in Russia. This announcement marks the beginning of Russia's commercial applications of 100G WDM transport networks. The stability of the 100G ULH coherent WDM system has fully demonstrated the maturity and state-of-the-art attributes of Huawei's 100G transport solution.
Coherent 100G technology, with a maximum line rate of 100 Gbit/s, is considered the most up-to-date technology that is able to deliver superior performance in mitigating chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion. Using this technology, 100 Gbit/s signals are more adaptable to fiber transmission while yielding a remarkable increase in bandwidth capacity for WDM systems. As such, the bandwidth capacity can reach as high as 8 Tbit/s over a single fiber and the regeneration-free transmission distance is significantly extended.
Russia is vast and has been in constant need of a solution that can transmit high-speed signals over ultra-long spans. Transtelecom, for example, owns the world's longest WDM backbone that is 18713 km long. Through collaboration with Huawei, Transtelecom created several new records in WDM transmission distances for its WDM commercial applications. Such breakthroughs included regeneration-free transmission of 10 Gbit/s signals over a distance of 2500 km during the 10G era and 40 Gbit/s signals over a distance of 1200 km during the 40G era. As coherent 100G technology is maturing, top operators in Russia have continued to collaborate with Huawei and are primed to pave the way for 100G commercial applications.
The testing fully demonstrated the superior service performance and stability of Huawei's 100G coherent systems. Huawei was able to show that its solution could transmit 100 Gbit/s services in combination with existing 10 Gbit/s and 40 Gbit/s services over a regeneration-free transmission distance of more than 2000 km.

Customer-centric innovation, commitment to establishing and maintaining long-term local partnerships, and localized operations are the keys to success for companies looking to thrive in emerging markets, said Ken Hu, Deputy Chairman of Huawei, speaking yesterday at the 13th Nikkei Global Management Forum in Tokyo.
"Emerging markets are the engine of global economic growth, but how to capitalize on opportunities in this challenging environment is a persistent question on the minds of CXOs around the world," Mr. Hu said. "To succeed in emerging markets today, companies need to focus on the concept of 'glocalization' – combining their globalization efforts with local insights and considerations. This means having keen insight into each market's unique social and economic environment by truly understanding its customers' core needs. Only then will companies be able to create the innovative business models necessary to win over customers."
"Innovation in emerging markets means practicality and adapting to local requirements; whether it requires adopting cutting-edge technology or just thinking outside of the box," said Mr. Hu. "Huawei’s emerging market experiences have included a ‘subtraction’ innovation approach, which focuses on doing away with seemingly standard features. In markets where construction is a barrier to network development, telecom equipment is customized to withstand harsh outdoor weather conditions and housed in an ‘open room’ that has no roofs or floors. This type of innovation reduces the costs required on civil engineering works by 50 percent."
The concept of reverse innovation, where solutions designed for emerging markets are then brought to developed markets has been used by Huawei as well. A site-sharing solution originally developed to tackle low utilization rates of wireless base stations and increase operational efficiency in India, was so successful that it has been deployed by telecom operators in Europe.
"Speed is another important factor when it comes to innovating successfully in emerging markets,"said Mr. Hu. "To become more nimble, Huawei has localized its management capabilities by forgoing its traditional top-down management style and empowering those in the field to be truly inventive and make key business decisions based on their specialized understanding of the market. Huawei Showcases Broadband Empowered ICT Services in ITU

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, recognizing the critical role of ICT in a nation’s development, showcased its portfolio of solutions that enable the public sector to enhance efficiency, improve livelihoods, and boost national economies at ITU Telecom World in Geneva, Switzerland.

Huawei’s safe cities solution, called "Broadband Safeguarded Cities", can improve public safety through intelligent video surveillance, which offers features such as facial recognition, invasion detection, and left article detection, enabling authorities to make informed decisions and take appropriate actions. Huawei’s e-Education solution, called "Broadband Extended Education", offers a wealth of teaching tools and interactive functions, and allows teachers to share resources which is of particular help to teachers in remote areas, and helps to reduce large-scale education costs. Huawei’s G-cloud (or government-cloud) solution provides an integrated platform for the transformation of public services, and facilitates large-scale collaboration between public sector organizations and the community.
Huawei also shared its views on the possibilities presented by ultra-broadband, and its unique experience in building next-generation national broadband networks (NBN) and "Broadband Supported Nations." According to the World Bank, broadband contributes more to GDP growth than other telecom services (e.g. fixed, mobile, internet) and every 10 percent increase in broadband penetration generates 1.3 percent economic growth. Recognizing the benefits of NBN, over 50 countries around the world have committed around USD100 billion to support the building and deployment of NBN.

Huawei to Launch TV White Space LTE TDD System Trial

Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, announced the successful launch of a TV White Space (TVWS) LTE TDD system trial. This innovative TVWS LTE TDD solution provided by Huawei will enable more widespread usage of TVWS spectrum and will improve spectrum efficiency.
As a result of the proliferation of smart devices, which has led to a much higher utilization of spectrum resources, mobile operators worldwide are now confronted with the urgent problem of limited spectrum resources. The search for new spectra has put a spotlight on TVWS - the spaces left between channels to limit interference. This spectrum, abundant in every country and vastly underused, offers many benefits for mobile broadband use, including large bandwidth, excellent penetration and propagation, and extensive coverage.
In 2008, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved the unlicensed use of TVWS. This decision opened the door for new devices and applications with support for TVWS to hit the U.S. market. As other regions and countries move toward finalizing regulations and standards for TVWS, the spectrum will eventually fulfill mobile broadband requirements and more applications will be created.
Huawei began this TVWS LTE TDD system development and verification test in 2009. After two years, the first phase of the laboratory trial was successfully completed in August 2011. The next phase—the system performance and interference coordination test and field trial—will be finalized in mid-2012.
"The LTE TDD system can take full advantage of TVWS bandwidth and enhance spectrum efficiency,"said Mr. Tan Zhu, director of wireless strategy department, Huawei. "We have seen that our TVWS LTE TDD system offers broader coverage and fewer sites, reducing both capital and operational expenditures. This LTE TDD system will benefit network and service providers by offering a combination of strong operation and management capability, a mature industry chain, and variety of deployment scenarios. We are excited to undertake the second phase of the trial next year."
